Welcome from the Chairman
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to welcome you in Heraklion, Crete for our 4th International Conference on Phosphonate Chemistry, Science and Technology, ICOPHOS-4. The Conference is organized by the members of the Crystal Engineering, Growth & Design Laboratory (Department of Chemistry, University of Crete), and it is under the auspices of the University of Crete.
It continues the tradition of three previous meetings, usually moving around Europe. Since the series’ inception in 2018, the series present, discuss, share and disseminate recent advances in phosphonate and phosphinate chemistry, thus promoting significant discoveries in science and technology.
The previous meetings took place in:
- 2018, Swansea, United Kingdom
- 2019, Berlin, Germany
- 2021, Liblice, Czech Republic
- 2023, Heraklion, Greece
A brief note on the history of these meetings is in order.
The concept of a meeting among researchers working in this field was hibernating for some years, until Prof. Marco Taddei (now at the University of Sienna) took a leap of faith and organized the first meeting in Swansea, UK. That meeting was followed up by the Berlin workshop, co-organized by Drs. Franziska Emmerling (BAM, Germany) and Gündoğ Yücesan (now at the Düsseldorf, Germany). The last meeting at Liblice, Czech Republic was organized by Dr. Jan Demel (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic).
The first three meetings took place in a much “simpler” mode and they were called “workshops”. However, it is my sincere opinion that the phosphonate field deserves its own conference. Hence, the 4th International Conference on Phosphonate Chemistry, Science and Technology (ICOPHOS-4) is before you!
The Conference Program will comprise two presentation formats, oral presentations and poster presentations. It is expected that a good number of oral presentations will occupy the dense conference program. Poster presentations have been organized in two (2) sessions (Monday and Tuesday evenings), and will run during cocktail receptions or coffee breaks. The posters will be on display during the whole day of each poster session. The Conference dinner will take place at the evening of the second day (Tuesday).
Since ICOPHOS-4 is a transitional event (workshop-to-conference), effort has been put to keeping the registration fee attractive for all participants (senior researchers and students). To that end, there are no invited, plenary or keynote oral presentations. I hope that you will all show understanding.
